Dear parents of Mr. Cheney’s biology students, Next week we will begin a unit on the role of zoos and aquariums in conservation and education. On Friday, April 30 this unit will conclude with a field trip to the Houston Zoo, where students will be working in small groups to accomplish a number of tasks. The accomplishment of these tasks will be demonstrated in a large “scrapbook” of pictures and information that the groups will complete in class during the week following the zoo trip.
“WHAT IF I CAN'T GO ON THAT DAY?”
This field trip is a required part of this unit. However, in the event of an emergency, a student will be able to make up the time by completing a six-page research paper that will substitute for the zoo experience. A student completing the research paper will still be able to work with his or her group to complete the scrapbook during class time.
“HOW MUCH WILL THIS COST ME?"
Because of the number of students attending (nearly 115), we will be taking three buses to the zoo. The cost of this will be approximately $8.00 per student. We are receiving a terrific discount from the zoo, so admission will only be $2.75 instead of the usual $7.00. Both of these costs will be billed from the school office, so the only money students need to bring is for lunch or souvenirs. Students are encouraged to bring a sac-lunch if they do not want to pay for food at the zoo.
“WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?”
I will also need several chaperones for this trip. Bus and Zoo admission will be free for chaperones. If you are interested in helping out, please contact me at:
cheneyp@concordiacrusaders.org or 281-351-2547 Extension 301.
I will be issuing permission slips and a “what to bring” list next week.
