The Beginning: Lutheran Education arrived in Guatemala in 1953, but it was not until 2002 when, by the grace of God, the first Lutheran School opened in the capital, Guatemala City. Primarily the vision of LCMS missionaries led by Rev. Herbert Burch, an energetic group Guatemalans, made the vision a reality. On September 20, 2001, the group rented a house and immediately began remodeling it into:
|
| * nine classrooms |
* principal's office |
* cafeteria |
| * computer laboratory |
* receptionist office |
* storage area |
|
Paid by the congregation through offerings and gifts, by November 2001, 80% of the work was complete and placement testing and preparation was provided to 39 students. The formal school year began in January 2002, starting with Kindergarten to 6th grade. |
The Vision: Colegio Luterano seeks to provide a Lutheran education to children regardless of social and economic background. The mixture of impoverished and middle class families suggested potential problems among the students.,but teachers say there is "a surprising absence of conflicts between the children." Definitely, the primary benefit in this arrangement has been the rapid spread of the saving Gospel by Rev. Burch, Dr. Orozco, and Mr. Bonilla who lead Wednesday chapel worship. It is daily reinforced by the school's Bible teacher. |
The Reality of Today: The school opened the 2003 academic year with an enrollment of 114 students and the addition of a middle school. Lives of children are changing in the capital of Guatemala. Instead of harvesting coffee with their parents, working as maids, begging on the streets, abusing drugs, or joining gangs…they are now in class, with clean faces, perfectly ironed clothing, polished shoes, and a backpack full of books, notebooks, and school materials. They love school, too. On the last day of classes, they cry. They would rather not have vacation, but stay in class. |
