PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE |
Did you know that there are 26 different names for God in the Old Testament? I hadn’t given that much thought until Bev and I started using the book, “Praying the Names of God.” Each week is devoted to one name. Just recently we have been studying the God of Justice. When the word “justice” is used in our world we normally think of crime and punishment. When people say they want justice, it usually means they want someone punished. We interpret justice as punitive. While at some points in the Old Testament, God is pictured as this punishing God, punishing the sins of humans, for the most part the God of justice works on behalf of those who have been ignored by the world—the blind, lame, poor, etc. In other words, God is the great equalizer. God knows that in this world of sin, wealth will flow into the hands of the very wealthy while the poor will starve. That is not the way God wants this world to be. God expects the governments of this world to take care of those who have been thrown off the bus of prosperity. How well does our government do that? Rising poverty, hunger and homeless rates answer that question. How will the God of Justice deal with us? Hopefully God will see that the Church is advocating for the most vulnerable instead of adding to their suffering. Hopefully God will find us faithfully working to provide. In Christ’s Love, Pastor Gary Panko | |
