Reduce, Reuse, Recycle,
Restore - Be Good Stewards
_______________

According to the EPA, over 380 billion plastic bags,
sacks and wraps are consumed in the U.S. each year.

Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photodegrade -
breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits
contaminating soil and waterways and entering the
food web when animals accidentally ingest.

The counter, from the website 'ReusableBags.Com',
shows how may plastic bags are consumed in a year
and at what rate.

Go 'Green'.

Buy reusable bags and USE them!

66% Were not Recycled!
The counter below is from the Container Recycling
Institute. It is registering how rapidly aluminum,
plastic or glass beverage containers were littered,
incinerated or landfilled in 2008.

Lenten Green Peace
It’s Lent and St. Patrick’s day is coming. These
are two perfect times to go ‘Green’ ! For Lent,
give up at least 2 ‘ungreen’ habits. By the time
Lent is over, you will have formed new eco-friendly
habits. For ‘St. Paddy’s Day’ think Green and
think about spring coming and vow to make one new
eco-friendly change in your lawn and garden.

Some ideas for Lenten ‘Green’ habits:

1. Use only re-usable beverage containers
2. Recycle ALL paper products
3. Go ‘paperless’ with as many bills &
statements as possible
4. Unplug/turn off all chargers, computers,
electric items not actually in use(plugged-in chargers
use power even when not in use)
5. If buying a new appliance, make energy
efficiency the 1st priority
6. Only buy products that are environmentally
safe and packaged ecologically
7. Compost all vegetable kitchen scraps
(check the composting back issue of ‘The Green Peace’
for links to sites listing compostable items)

Some ’St. Paddy’s Lawn & Garden Ideas:

1. Look for a low-water perennial to plant
in the spring
2. Buy an electric mower
3. Go ‘natural’ with pest and weed control
4. Mulch around all plants & bushes to conserve
water
5. Plant self-seeding annuals for continual rejuvenation
6. Plant a tree
7. Compost!

Use Lent to learn more about becoming environmental (just ‘Google’ “green ideas”)
and form new ‘Green’
habits. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by making your
yard more ecological. Then you can really enjoy the
‘green beer’!

Video on Global Effect of
Plastic Bags
Here is a link to a little video on
the effect of plastic bags on the
environment. This video says and shows
the effects better than Ms Green Peace
ever could.

Please, take the time to check it out.

Then, please use cloth bags
whenever possible.

CFL Environmental Information

There is some concern about mercury in the CFLs
(Compact Fluorescent Lights).

There IS mercury in the bulbs. That is why they must
be recycled (Ace in Morris takes them) when broken or
burned out.

However, the amount of mercury is very small and if
recycled properly, can be recaptured. The negative
effect on the environment is very small - smaller than
the impact of using traditional light bulbs.

For more information, check out March's Green Peace.

Thank you for caring about the environment!

The Green Peace Archives
The Green Peace - Mission
In the first two chapters of Genesis, God assigns
stewardship of the earth to us and outlines our responsibility.

It's an awesome task!! However,
we have been given all the gifts we need to
do the job.

In 'The Green Peace' you will find easy, everyday
helpful hints to aid in the stewardship mission
we have been given. If we try to make one small
change each week - even each month - we can make a
huge impact on saving and healing our
'Mother Earth'.
