Raise Anchor, Set Sail!
Church-wide Devotional Study Begins Sept. 11

Look for your study guide in the mail after Sept. 5

Ahoy, Mate! Raise Anchor, Set Sail is the theme for this fall’s church-wide devotional study. The 36-day study will begin on September 11, Rally Sunday. Raise Anchor, Set Sail will feature a daily scripture verse, devotional, reflection questions, and a prayer. Small groups are encouraged to use the study; individual’s quiet time will be enriched by the study; and families with children will have a supplemental guide to use with their children.

Raise Anchor, Set Sail devotional study is a focus on our core beliefs as outlined in the Apostle’s Creed. This is the “ship’s log” so to speak for our spiritual voyage this fall. Pastors from St. Andrew’s, Luther Seminary and Augsburg Press created this devotional study specifically for St. Andrew’s as we get ready to Raise Anchor and Set Sail. We invite everyone to come aboard. Jesus our Captain is calling.

Sermons will complement this study and Sunday morning education programs will expand on the daily messages. A “Welcome Aboard” picnic will be held on Sunday, Sept.

Saint Andrew's Daily Devotional: Sailing

In the Gospels, we have several stories of Jesus and the disciples sailing across the sea of Galilee. These short voyages often had adventures, such as windstorms, or miracles, such as walking on water. Sometimes a fishing boat was used as a preaching platform or a discipleship lesson (Follow me and I will make you fish for people, Mark 1:17). As time went on, the ship became a model or image of the entire church, sailing together with Christ. The ship thus became the logo for St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church. As a congregation we are on a voyage of adventure and challenge. Jesus Christ is our captain and navigator. We can give thanks that he has charted a course that will keep us afloat and on course. As captain, he has assigned each crew member duties to preform. This is not a cruise ship, where some are servants and others are guest, but rather a rescue vessel, carrying the good news of Jesus Christ and his kingdom to a lost and drowning humanity. Together we can set sail to bring the great message of Captain Jesus to the world.

    Contributed by Pastor John Keller

Matthew 14:32-33 (NRSV) When Jesus and Peter got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
