St. Matthew Preschool ~ (from the Sept 2011 Newsletter)
Wow! I can’t believe summer is almost over . As much as I enjoy my vacation, I am looking forward to having all of my friends return to school. I know that I have a wonderful group of students returning and I am looking forward to having an opportunity to make some new friends this year. School begins Monday, August 22 We will have 2 back-to-school nights on Friday, August 12 and Tuesday, August 16. We will be doing many exciting things this year. One of my favorites is our class book that each student can take home to share with their family. At the end of the school year, each student will be able to keep one as a preschool memory. We will also be going on some interesting field trips. Our first field trip will be in September when we will be putting up our display in the education building at the Bloomsburg Fair. Be sure to check it out! I am looking forward to another wonderful year. Miss Cherry

“A Total Learning Experience”

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
St. Matthew Preschool is designed to provide an encouraging and challenging environment for 3, 4, and 5 year olds and to develop their intellectual, social, physical and emotional growth in a Christian setting. Nontraditional, developmentally appropriate activities including free play, circle, story time, music, creative movement, free expressions, group activities, learning centers and computer activities promote the growth of the whole child and establish a solid foundation for future learning.

Bible teachings with follow-up projects are presented and Christian attitudes and values are exemplified. The religious materials used are nondenominational and the program is open to all children.

STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:
Students must be at least three years of age, potty trained and have MMR immunization.

HISTORY OF PRESCHOOL
Saint Matthew’s preschool was started around 1990 and was licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in June 1991. The school holds sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings for the 4 and 5 year old children and Tuesday and Thursday mornings for the 3 year olds. The school began having some financial problems in 1992, but by January of 1993, the spring enrollment was completely filled and by April of 1993 the school was financially sound. New Linoleum was laid and the school was painted in 1993.

Over the years students went on field trips to a variety of locations around town chosen for their educational and fun features for the children. Some of the sites visited were a dentist office, library, Giant Grocery Store and the Bloomsburg Fire Department. The preschool participates in Renaissance in downtown Bloomsburg and starting in 1996, students have decorated a tree for Treefest. Students have put a display in the education building at the Bloomsburg Fair usually depicting an Old Testament Story for several years. This is the first field trip of the year and the children work very hard to make their display and set it up. Other activities during the school year include a Christmas program, a Mother’s Day tea, and a graduation program for those children going to kindergarten.

The school is so successful that for the 2006 fall term an afternoon session is scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in addition to the morning sessions.

Miss Cherry’s philosophy about teaching is to provide a comfortable environment where learning is fun.
