HISTORY OF PRESCHOOL
Saint Matthew’s preschool was started around 1990 and was licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in June 1991. The school holds sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings for the 4 and 5 year old children and Tuesday and Thursday mornings for the 3 year olds. The school began having some financial problems in 1992, but by January of 1993, the spring enrollment was completely filled and by April of 1993 the school was financially sound. New Linoleum was laid and the school was painted in 1993.
Over the years students went on field trips to a variety of locations around town chosen for their educational and fun features for the children. Some of the sites visited were a dentist office, library, Giant Grocery Store and the Bloomsburg Fire Department. The preschool participates in Renaissance in downtown Bloomsburg and starting in 1996, students have decorated a tree for Treefest. Students have put a display in the education building at the Bloomsburg Fair usually depicting an Old Testament Story for several years. This is the first field trip of the year and the children work very hard to make their display and set it up. Other activities during the school year include a Christmas program, a Mother’s Day tea, and a graduation program for those children going to kindergarten.
The school is so successful that for the 2006 fall term an afternoon session is scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in addition to the morning sessions.
Miss Cherry’s philosophy about teaching is to provide a comfortable environment where learning is fun.
