Thank you, Lord, for coming to me in my loneliness and vulnerability. When I am alone and in
the midst of trials and temptations, you are with me - and therein my strength. Almighty God,
with your presence and power, I will step out and boldly witness to your grace. Amen.

Council Reflections

Elaine H.
I grew up going to a small Presbyterian country church in Illinois. All those years
attending church services, Sunday school, youth group, ice cream socials and
many other things left me with the incredible feeling that I belonged there and
that I shared in the belief of God. After leaving home, I really didn’t go to church
regularly because I just didn’t have the time or I guess I just took some years off
getting up early on Sunday morning (or the rebellion years in college). Anyway,
after college and settling into my first real job, I started looking for a church to
go to and I also was starting to substitute for organists around Waterloo. I applied
for an organist position here at St Ansgar and the rest is history. The sense of
belonging somewhere came back to me. I had not realized how much I had missed
that and how essential that was for my life. In today’s world, I truly believe that
people are missing that very important sense of belonging. Being a part of a church
and its congregation and sharing in a common belief that we are all in God’s family
is vital today. Without that, I believe people can find themselves empty and alone,
not knowing where to turn.

As a Christian and a member of St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, I believe it is my job to
let others know that we are a family here and they are invited to be a part of this
family. No one is turned away. We are here for you in your greatest struggles and in
your greatest celebrations. Anyway, that is how I was treated when I first came here
and it has only grown stronger. Like one of the songs in my book of alternative
worship music, “People Need the Lord”. Whether they know it or not, they do.

Thanks family!
Elaine

BISHOP NORTHEAST IA SYNODPRESIDING ELCA BISHOP

--Rev. Steven L. Ullestad

--Rev. Mark S. Hanson
Pastor Steven Ullestad has served as Bishop of the Northeastern Iowa Synod
since 1992. His ministry priorities include strengthening and supporting rostered
persons in their ministries, focusing congregations on mission, deepening
spiritual renewal, strengthening youth ministry, increasing awareness of biblical
principles of stewardship and building ministry partnerships.

He currently serves on the board of Lutheran Services in Iowa, Wartburg College,
Allen Hospital and Allen College. He is chairperson of Barnabas Uplift and Face
It Together substance abuse prevention coalition, advisory bishop to Augsburg
Fortress Board, and member of the ELCA Task Force on Genetics.

In August 2001, the Churchwide Assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America (ELCA) elected Mark S. Hanson to serve as presiding bishop.

The presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is elected
to a six-year term by the Churchwide Assembly. In addition to fulfilling such
roles as preacher, teacher and administrator of the sacraments, which
traditionally belong to the office of bishop, the presiding bishop of this church
serves as president and chief executive officer of the corporation and oversees
the staff, budget, and overall administration of the church.
