Victor C. Langford III was born in Detroit, Michigan. He is a 1957 graduate of Cass Technical High School, Detroit, Michigan. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Seattle Pacific College, Seattle, Washington and Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Divinity Degrees from Concordia Theological Seminary, Springfield, Illinois.Victor was ordained a Lutheran minister on 27 June 1965 and is currently a member of the Northwest Washington Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. |
As an intern, heorganized Bethel Lutheran Church, New Orleans; he has served as the pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Houston, Texas and the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Seattle, Washington. In November 1976, he began serving and continues to serve the Saint Mark’s Lutheran Church, Seattle, Washington. In July 1991, he was elected to a two year term as the President of the African American Lutheran Association of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Currently, he is a member of the ELCA Lutheran/Orthodox Dialogue Commission, and an Editorial Associate, Lutheran Partners Magazine.In March 1972, he was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the Army National Guard. Chaplain Langford’s previous assignments include: Battalion Chaplain, 3rd Battalion, 161st Infantry; Battalion Chaplain, 181st Support Battalion; Brigade Chaplain, 66th Aviation Brigade (Corps); State Area Command Chaplain, Washington Army National Guard. In June 1997, he was appointed Assistant Chief of Chaplains, Army National Guard, Office of the Chief of Chaplains, Department of the Army. On 8 September 1998, Chaplain Langford was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. He completed 29 years of military service and retired on August 31, 2001. Chaplain Langford’s military education includes the U. S. Army Chaplain Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Chaplain Reserve Components General Staff Course, the Clinical Pastoral Education Course and the Installation Chaplain Course. He is a graduate of the United States Army War College Corresponding Studies Class of 1997. His awards and decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Washington State Legion of Merit, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with hourglass device, Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, and the National Guard Service Ribbon. Chaplain Langford is married to the former Luana Calvert of Detroit, Michigan. They have four children, Tanya, Natalie, Kineta and Victor IV.
