Mariah McArthur was born a slave in 1830, in Wilcox County, Alabama, owned by John McArthur. Mariah had three girls, Alice, Ella, & Nellie and two boys, Toby & Edwin.
Her daughter Alice, who was born a slave in 1861, married Joseph Smith on December 31, 1883. They had two children, John and Charlie. Ten years, later on December 31, 1893, she married Wade Hampton. Their children were George, Ameilia, Harvard, Wade Jr., Nellie and Emmett. Alice died on November 17, 1917.
Nellie Hampton was born free in 1900 in Wilcox County (Miller’s Ferry), Alabama. She married Henry Hoots who was born in 1899 in Wilcox County to Robert Hoots and Mary Williams Hoots. Henry and Nellie brought to life Ora, Annie Mae, Mary Alice, Katie Lee, Henry Jr., Oharol, Jeannette, Robert, Dorothy, Doris, Flayvilla, Iris, and Alice.
