As Julie’s eager hunger began to subside and her suckling diminished in forcefulness, Cassie examined her first born closely. Her wisps of dark red hair curled in the sweaty places where their bodies touched. Her surprisingly mahogany eyes had gone from ravenous anticipation to a drowsy half mast as Julie eased toward sleep. “You have your father’s nose, my pet. But where did the wisdom hiding in your eyes begin?” Cassie murmured as she gently rocked the chair. “What ancient memories reside behind those ringlet lashes on your eyes? What very precious gift have I been given, child of my soul?”

Cassie continued to rock and marvel at the wonder of the life sheltered between her arms. The steady creaking of the chair lulled her into a meditative state, her evening’s blessing at the end of a long day.

After a time Martin joined them. Together they settled Julie in her crib for a longer nap and prepared the simple salad and pasta which was their evening meal. Cassie marveled once again at the gift of renewed energy that came to her along with her quiet thoughts at gloaming.
