Sunday Worship Themes

Starting Sunday mornings on Sept 17, Pastor John will preach a series of sermons entitled "The Way of  the Cross".

October 29                                       "A New Heart"

Driving Questions for Worship and Educational Sessions

Worship and Learning are two essential and complementary aspects of a person’s faith development and expression.  The Life Together SCS curriculum grows out of the lectionary readings for each Sunday’s worship.  Following are the driving questions for October, 2006:

October 15 ....................“What is the ‘wealth’ we are afraid to give away?”

October 22 ................... “What determines greatness?”

October 29 ................... “What does grace mean to you?”

Please make these driving questions an important part of your prayers and preparations for weekly worship and learning activities.

Feast of Saint Luke

Mark your calendars and plan to gather for a healing service on October 18 at 7 p.m. to commemorate the ministry of this saint and to pray for the healing fo all who are in need.  At this Eucharist there will be an opportunity for anointing with holy oil and the laying on of hands.  Please join on on this night.  .

Biloxi Moxie Part II

Saint Stephen is looking for volunteers interested in travelilng again to Biloxi, Mississippi to help with the continued rebuilding of the region.  The cost per person is approximately $300 to cover gass and lodging to Biloxi and back.   Food and lodging in Biloxi would again be at Bethel Lutheran Church.  The date for this trip is November 3-13.  Interested or have questions?  Contact Pastor John by October 15.

Around the Parish

Saint Stephen will gather with our brothers and sisters from Trinity United Methodist on October 4 at 6:00 PM at the picnic pavilion for the commemoration of Saint Francis of Assisi. Please feel free to bring your pets to receive a blessing as we mark the occasion of this saint. Please remember to have your dogs on a leash and smaller animals such as birds, hamsters, or cats in appropriate travel carriers.

October 18 at 7:00 PM, our congregation will host another service of healing to commemorate Saint Luke’s day. Please join us as we remember the beloved physician and evangelist and also pray for the sick and all who have a vocation to the healing arts. All are welcome!

About Levi’s Table: This is the name for our contemporary worship service Sunday evenings at 5:00 PM. The name was inspired by Mark 2:13-17 as a way of conveying Christ’s gracious hospitality in new and surprising ways. Please join us Sunday evenings for Levi’s Table, followed by a meal at 6:00 PM and youth activities at 6:30. All are welcome!

Please keep Lily Marie Fabian in your prayers as she prepares to receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism on the 18th Sunday after Pentecost (October 8). Also, please continue to lift her parents Derek and Amber in your prayers as they seek to honor the promises they will make at Lily’s baptism.

Helping Hands (one of our evangelical initiatives) continues to meet to and discuss possible local community service projects in and around New Kingstown. Additionally, this group has been volunteering to work with Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity. Our next project day is scheduled for October 28. If you would like to volunteer, please contact either Bill McCormick or Jim McPherson.

The Open Table (another of our evangelical initiatives) originally had plans to begin a series of small congregational gatherings this fall. Due to a need for additional time to more fully discuss how these gatherings might come together the start of these small groups have been delayed until the first part of 2007. Please watch upcoming newsletters and bulletins for when the first of these will take place.

You're Invited To El Salvador

Bishop Gomez of El Salvador told us to "pray, fast, and come." to pray for them, to fast in the sense that 'fasting' means emptying ourselves of our fullness and giving out of that fullness to their emptiness — and then to come visit our brothers and sisters there, in order to see and hear for ourselves the realities of their lives, and to bear witness here to the repression and injustice that mark their daily existence.

We plan to visit our sister church Divine Redeemer and to meet with Pastor Miguel and see many parts of the countryside. If interested please contact Pastor Don Seiple (766-4806) immediately. To help our young people with the expense of the trip you may make contributions to the El Salvador Fund.  Just put El Salvador on your envelope or check.

Come Pray With Us!

St. Stephen's prayer group has just reorganized and we would like to invite you to join us. You can participate in one or both of the following ways:
1) Request to be matched with a prayer partner from within our church. Prayer partners make contact at least several times a week to share prayers joys and concerns and to pray together. This can be in person, by phone, or, in some cases, by email if needed. Prayer partners are rotated every three months, so you can decide each quarter whether you will participate. We hope this very personal form of prayer will help draw you closer to God and to members of our church.

2) Attend our monthly prayer gatherings. Each month, we will have either a prayer service, a Bible study related to prayer, or experience form of prayer. These opportunities will be advertised in advance and can be attended as you are available. This variety and flexibility should provide meaningful chances to engage in prayer and study around God's Word on prayer.

Our first meeting in this new format will be Tuesday, September 13, at 7PM. It will include a prayer service and brief planning meeting for upcoming events. If you want to be a prayer partner for the Quarter 4 of this year (October through December) or Quarter 1 of next year (January through March), please attend the meeting or let Stacy Schroeder know prior to that date. Further details on prayer group are also available.
