February 2012 VOL. 12 No. 2

PASTOR'S CORNER
Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. (2) Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may happen on earth. (3) If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth, and if a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie. (4) He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap. (5) As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. (6) In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.

We had this text the other day in our Sunday School. It made an impression on me. I hope it will make an impression on you as well. Primarily it is an admonition to charity. We should not withhold our hand from helping the needy in our midst. Whether it be seven, eight or more! Whether it be in the morning or in the evening, we should be able to help the needy in front of us. Luther’s explanation of the 5th commandment “help and support him in every physical need” and the 7th “help him to improve and protect his possessions and income” compel our Christian faith to help those in need.

Sometimes it seems discouraging that no matter how often we try to help people it doesn’t seem to do any good. But Solomon tells us, “you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.” Apparently, that is not our problem but the Lord’s! St. Paul reminds us, “Galatians 6:9-10 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (10) So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”

But there was also another aspect of this passage which came up in bible study. The problems of fear and indecision. Fear and indecision cause us to do nothing. Nothing is not what Christ has called us to do with our faith. You might remember the parables of the talents and minas. Matt. 25:13ff and Luke 19:13ff. In both parables the master distributes his wealth to his servants and entrust them to do something with it. The first two put the wealth to work and the 3rd buries it because he is 1. lazy and 2. fearful. The first two are commended and the third is condemned by the words of his own mouth. Note he is not condemned for failure. He is condemned because he feared and therefore indecisive and inactive. When the Lord comes, will he find us working with the gifts He has given us, or find us inactive due to fear and indecision? I pray the Lord will find us acting out of love and trust in Him. Our calling is to be faithful, not successful. Certainly, let us use our reason and wisdom in what we do, but let us not let it be ruled by fear of failure, but trust in the loving kindness of Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pastor Guillaume Williams, Sr.

FROM THE BOARD OF ELDERS
Pastor Williams has scheduled a congregational meeting for February 4th from 10 am till Noon. This meeting is open to all members and we can discuss any subjects which are of concern. We support these efforts, and hope you will all pray, attend, and bring forth your thoughts and concerns.

We again encourage all members to introduce yourself to any one you may see at a service that you don't already know, be they a visitor or an existing member. Now that we have gone from two services each Sunday to one, we have the opportunity to get to know each other better as members of the Hope family.

If you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to contact your assigned Elder, who is listed under your phone number in the directory. There have been some reassignments since we went from five Elders to four a couple of months ago.

In service to our Lord, Your Board of Elders
Gene Scheiter,Chairman, Don Hunkeler, Gary Staerkel,Tim Otten, and Chuck Kiel

BOARD OF EDUCATION
First we want to thank Mary Ellen Staerkel for the great job she does as Superintendent of our Sunday School. It isn't always easy finding people to serve as teachers, or to substitute when needed, but she goes with the flow and does a super (pun on title) job. Blessings, Mary!

Thank you to all of you who give your time on Sunday mornings to teach our younger members about Jesus and the love God has for them. Thank you to Christina Williams who works with our older youth. She does a great job. Thank you to Gary Staerkel, Charlie and Fran Lashley for teaching our Living Way Bible study every Monday morning and evening. You are all so very appreciated and we thank God for all of you.

Of course Sunday morning or weekly Bible studies must be mentioned with a thank you to Pastor Williams. You are a wonderful teacher who always is willing to share and answer questions about our Savior. We are blessed to have you at Hope.

A thank you goes out to all those members who have given monetary gifts in 2011 to Lambs of Hope Preschool, Daycare, and Afterschool Care. Your support has helped us a great deal. God Bless you!

Finally, we are looking for a VBS leader. Too early you say, NEVER! Information is coming into the office and if we start early, we can make plans to reach out to our community inviting families and children to Hope Chapel through VBS. INTERESTED? Please contact Karen Kiel, 302-0438.

LWML NEWS
We hope that everyone’s New Year has gotten off to a wonderful start. This year, our February 14th meeting will take the group back to Lake Area Industries, Inc., to share a Valentine’s Day party with that wonderful group. Our group loves to visit there where we are greeted with such warmth and affection. Look for more details about the visit in the Sunday bulletin.

We have voted that we will have 2 rummage sales this year, even though they are a lot of work, there is much need out there. Tentatively, the date is set for April 20th and 21st.

Now is a good time to join our group, because as a larger group, we can accomplish more. We warmly encourage all ladies of Hope to consider joining us. It is not necessary to come to every meeting, but to come and help us with our projects for the coming year. One of the benefits of being a member of our guild, is that members will receive four issues a year of the LWML “Lutheran Woman’s Quarterly”, which contains some excellent devotional material as well as information about what the LWML is doing around the world.

Remember to turn in your mite box, so Debbie can send the money to the Zone by the 20th of the month.

God’s Blessings to All!

Lois Grawe –LWML secretary

CIRCLE OF HOPE
Our next meeting will be in March. I hope to see you there! If Camdenton Schools are called off that day for bad weather, we will not be meeting. We fellowship, do devotionals and bible studies as well as a few mission projects: “Quiet Bags” for the little ones during service, banners for baptisms and new banners for the different seasons. All women and teens are welcome to join us.

LIVING WAY LIVING WAY BIBLE STUDY is a practical course of study with a special emphasis on the application of God's Word to the life of the individual. While emphasizing practical application, LWBS presents each book of the Bible as the holy, inspired Word of God - the confessional position of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. Living Way Bible Study's purpose is to help equip believers to live joyfully in God's redeeming love and to share with others God's plan of salvation.

LWBS meets on Mondays at 9:30 am at the church and 7:00 pm at the Staerkel’s Home. Everyone is welcome to join us at anytime.

In case of inclement weather, we will not meet if the Camdenton RIII classes are cancelled for the day.

LAMBS OF HOPE
Daycare - Preschool - Afterschool Care

February will bring lots of new things to learn in preschool. Lots of fun things to do in daycare and we have added some new things to our afterschool care. And when these kids say “I want to stay just a little longer” I think that means we’re doing something right. As long as the children are happy being here, that means the parents are happy too, and that’s important.

We’ve added 3 new 2 year old students, Nevack Robinson and twin boys Jayce and Brody Price. We’re very happy to have them.

Brenda Adams, Director

Hello everyone! January was a great month in preschool! The children came back from Christmas break ready to learn. Our theme for the month was the five senses. We learned all about each sense. We even had a taste test while discussing our sense of taste. The children ate salty, sweet, and sour foods and we made a chart of their favorite one. We learned about Noah, Obadiah, Paul, and Queen Esther. Our Bible verse was, "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him" (Psalm 34:8). In February, we are going to learn about love and how we should love one another. We will celebrate Valentine's Day by having a small party and exchanging Valentines with each other!

Miss Amanda, 3 and 4 yrs old Preschool Teacher

I recently began teaching the two-year old preschool class. Preschoolers are learning the letters N,O,P,Q and the numbers 11 and 12. The children have really enjoyed the counting activities. The children counted to 12 using goldfish crackers and then glued them on a penguin. (They "might" have snacked on a few also.) After reading Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? The children made cotton ball polar bears. We also have been learning about several different bible characters. The children especially enjoyed hearing the story about Noah.

February will soon be here. We will be doing Valentine's crafts, along with having a Valentine's Day party. We will also be continuing on with our letters and numbers.

Miss Chelsey, 2 yr. old Preschool Teacher

Pray for Lambs of Hope and this mission God has sent our way.

THANK YOU!
DEAR FRIENDS IN CHRIST of Hope Chapel, you all were so sweet to send me a get well card and prayers for my broken leg. I’m hoping I’ll be able to get up there again soon to see Guillaume, Christina, and the kids and to meet you all.
Thank you so much, Marcia Williams.

THANK YOU for your gift to Mid-Missouri Lutheran Ministries. Gifts like these help us maintain our mission to serve patients from all over central Missouri who are in Columbia hospitals.
Thanks again, Pat Hansen, treasurer, MMLM> CHRISTMAS IS SHARING – We want to thank the Kiels, Lashleys, Lomans, Debbie Thompson, Lois Grawe, Sonja Howard and Judi Owens for shopping, wrapping and delivering gifts for the 6 Christmas is Sharing families we adopted. We had $600 left which we gave to the sponsoring organization, Child Advocacy Council, to pay for gift certificates for over 100 families that were not adopted. We received generous funds from Thrivent, Hope Sunday School, Hope member contributions, and Lambs of Hope. We thank you for sharing with families less fortunate than we are.
~ Margaret Scheiter

BETTE OLSON would like to extend an expression of thanks for the basket of fruit and gifts she received for Christmas. Also for the prayers of Pastor Williams and all the love she receives from Hope Chapel.

THE LAKE AREA COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA would like to thank Hope Lutheran Church for hosting our winter concert. The warmth of your reception provides additional inspiration for our music. We appreciate all who make this performance at your facility possible.
Carroll Rinker, Secretary

BOOK ENDS
There are three books on the library table that are "good" reading for the students.

"Destined to Live" by Ruth Gruener is the real life account of a Polish girl born in the early 1930's in Lvov, Poland. Life was very good for her before the German invasion as her parents owned a candy store. Once the German invasion began, there were many restrictions and demands placed on the Jewish people. The book tells how she and her parents remain hidden and avoid deportation to the camps. Some of the things she endures during the years of the war are no friends of her age, no pets, hunger, hiding in uncomfortable places to name a few. Read this book to learn of her life after the war ends.

"Malka" is an account of a real Jewish family in Poland and Hungary. Much of the book is fictionalized due to Malka’s young age and the suppression of what happened when things were really bad. Malka is a real person who eventually was able to emigrate to Israel after the war.

“Wind In The Willows" was Kenneth Grahames only novel and his best known work. Adults and youngsters have enjoyed this fantasy of individual animals - Mr. Toad, Water Rat, Mole and Badger. Actually it is a subtle parody of English society at the time the book was written.

The library has received a much needed bookcase!!!!! You will notice that books have been moved - but the categories are clearly marked on the shelves. It is the intent to abolish the "double shelving" that was present in some categories. The area that held pamphlets has been cleared and now holds the Large Bibles. This will give space on the library table for reading, homework, holding laptops. etc.
