NOVEMBER, 2009 VOL. 8 No. 11
PASTOR'S CORNER
It is November. If you can get past the Halloween sale and the Christmas decorations, you may actually see something being sold for Thanksgiving. This is a good time of the year to consider what the Lord Jesus has done for us and how we can give thanks to Him. Sometimes I get asked how much should we give to the Lord in thanksgiving for all He has done for us. In the New Testament there isn’t an exact amount commanded by God. But God has a lot to say about giving or making sacrifices to God. Concerning the Old Testament Paul has this to say, “Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come.” 1Co 10:11
Our first example of sacrifice comes in Genesis. Gen 4:3-4 “In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, (4) and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering. . . .” Note that Abel gave of the firstborn of the flock but Cain just brought “an offering.” We know Cain did not offer his sacrifice in faith because it wasn’t accepted. We may also note he just gave “an offering.” Not the first fruits, not a tithe. It is almost like it was an afterthought or perhaps it was done only under compulsion.
Gen 14:19-20 gives us the first example of the tithe. “And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; (20) and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!" And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.” Jacob does something similar in Gen 28:20-22 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, (21) so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, (22) and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you." We should take note that these offerings were not commanded by God but were given out of thanksgiving.
In the Torah, the Law of Moses, God gives the Israelites many laws concerning the various sacrifices and offerings. One is the first-fruit or first-born. Lev 27:26 "But a firstborn of animals, which as a firstborn belongs to the LORD, no man may dedicate; whether ox or sheep, it is the LORD's.” Deu 18:4 “You shall give him the first-fruit of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the first of the fleece of your sheep.” Deu 26:2 “you shall take of the first of all the fruit of the earth which you shall bring of your land that Jehovah your God gives you, and you shall put it in a basket, and shall go to the place which Jehovah your God shall choose to place His name there.”
There were other offerings as well. Lev 7:5-6 “The priest shall burn them on the altar as a food offering to the LORD; it is a guilt offering. (6) Every male among the priests may eat of it. It shall be eaten in a holy place. It is most holy.” Lev 7:32 “And you shall give the right shoulder to the priest for a heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.” Lev 7:13-14 “With the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving he shall bring his offering with loaves of leavened bread. (14) And from it he shall offer one loaf from each offering, as a gift to the LORD. It shall belong to the priest who throws the blood of the peace offerings.”
While the Patriarchs offered a tithe freely, the LORD commands them of the Israelites. Lev 27:30 "Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the LORD's; it is holy to the LORD.” Lev 27:32 “And every tithe of herds and flocks, every tenth animal of all that pass under the herdsman's staff, shall be holy to the LORD.” Num 18:24 “For the tithe of the people of Israel, which they present as a contribution to the LORD, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance. Therefore I have said of them that they shall have no inheritance among the people of Israel."
We see in the prophets, the people of Israel were not always obedient to the Law of Moses. Mal 3:8-10 “Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In your tithes and contributions. (9) You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. (10) Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
In Exodus we read this about the Tabernacle of Lord. Exo 35:5-10 “Take from among you a contribution to the LORD. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the LORD's contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; (6) blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; goats' hair, (7) tanned rams' skins, and goatskins; acacia wood, (8) oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, (9) and onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece. (10) "Let every skillful craftsman among you come and make all that the LORD has commanded:” There were other contributions made for the Tabernacle of the Lord. It was from the contributions of the people it was built. Later after the Jews returned to Jerusalem after the exile, the temple had to be rebuilt, the people again had to offer their goods for the rebuilding and upkeep of the temple. But it was not always working as Nehemiah reminds us. Neh 13:11 “So I confronted the officials and said, "Why is the house of God forsaken?" And I gathered them together and set them in their stations.”
What can we learn from the examples of the Old Testament? They gave of the first-fruits and first-born. They gave a tenth of all the LORD had given them. They gave many other offerings—peace, guilt, thanksgiving to mention several. All these gifts were given to the LORD. The priests as God’s representatives received these offerings as their wages. There were also offerings for the building and upkeep of the temple.
St. Paul has much to say about giving as well in the New Testament. 2Co 8:7 “But as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you--see that you excel in this act of grace also.” The act of grace being the offerings of the Corinthians. We see the basis of the Corinthians act of grace here: 2Co 8:9 “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”
2Co 8:12 “For if the readiness is there, it is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.” As in the principle of tithing in the Old Testament, we give as the Lord has given unto us. 2Co 9:6-15 “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. (7) Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (8) And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. (9) As it is written, "He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." (10) He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. (11) You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. (12) For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. (13) By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, (14) while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. (15) Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!”
We see in this passage from 2 Cor. several principles in Christian giving. A. God rewards us according to our giving. B. God wants us to give cheerfully. C. God provides for us in our giving. D. Giving to God is an act of thanksgiving.
For what purpose does God still want us to give? Gal 6:6-8 “One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches. (7) Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. (8) For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” 1Co 9:9-14 “For it is written in the Law of Moses, "You shall not muzzle an ox when it treads out the grain." Is it for oxen that God is concerned? (10) Does he not speak entirely for our sake? It was written for our sake, because the plowman should plow in hope and the thresher thresh in hope of sharing in the crop. (11) If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? (12) If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. (13) Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? (14) In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.”
We see here that God wants us to share all good things with our pastors and those who instruct us in God’s Word. God wants those who sow spiritual things among us to reap material things from us. They are to make their living from the Gospel. In order to encourage us to not be slack in doing so or not to do so for fear of not having enough for ourselves, God promises us that as we sow so shall we reap.
Mar 12:41-44 “And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. (42) And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. (43) And he called his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. (44) For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."” Act 2:44-45 “And all who believed were together and had all things in common. (45) And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.”
So how much should we give? You can certainly take the Old Testament as an example but not as a law. You could give the first day of the year’s earnings as a first-fruit. Perhaps more as a principle, when you get paid, you could take out what you intend to give to God first. Many Christians find many blessings in giving the tithe—10% of their income. The widow and the early church gave everything to the Lord trusting in the Lord’s providence. We certainly should give in proportion to how the Lord Jesus has blessed us. We should be certain in our own minds as to how much we should give and give it cheerfully. Please prayerfully consider how the Lord has blessed you spiritually and materially this last year as plan on what you will be giving to the Lord, through the Church, in thanksgiving for all His benefits to you. Amen.

FROM THE BOARD OF ELDERS
The holiday season is fast approaching and will be upon us before we know it. Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas and a new year—That is about how fast time is going by. We have an election of officers coming up for the board of elders along with many other positions that need to be filled. Prayerfully consider doing so if you are asked to fill a position in the church. The board of elders is finishing up calling, phoning, visiting (if possible) delinquent members. At the January meeting, there will be a recommendation for the congregation to vote on. This will not be an easy decision for any of the board members but is something that has to be done. Another thing that needs to be done involves ALL of the congregation. Please turn in your yellow contribution card by November 8th. You can place it in the offering plate during a church service or place it in the mail. The board of finance needs to have some idea of how much money we will have for the budget—there is no commitment (or pledge) attached to the card. It is just an important tool to be used in planning.
Let’s not forget: If you see someone at church that you don’t recognize, go to that person, greet them and make them feel welcome. We would like the same consideration when we visit another church, wouldn’t we?
In Service to our Lord,
Your Board of Elders

LWML NEWS
There will not be a regularly scheduled meeting for the month of November on Tuesday, November 10. A lot of our members will be working with Karen Kiel for the Thrivent Financial for Lutheran sponsored “Doorway to the Holiday”-Bazaar to be held on Saturday, November 7, and will be tied up for much of the first week of November.
A preliminary report from our October rummage sale shows that we made $1194. We still have some outstanding IOU’s and a hide-a-bed to take to Bear Market to hopefully sell. A report will be given on the final earnings as soon as it is completed. Once again we wish to thank everyone for the contributions to our sale, and for all of the men and women of the congregation who helped chair, set up, advertise, unpack, price, work both the days of the sale, pack up items to take to Hope House, deliver the items, and get the facility cleaned up for the next morning. There are too many people to name, and at the risk of omitting anyone, we heartily thank everyone for their help in our Christian missionary endeavor
Plans are under way for our annual Christmas Party on December 6 at the Inn of the Grand Glaize. Be sure to save the date. There will be more details in future Sunday bulletins. All of the women of the church are warmly encouraged to join us for our Christmas Party.
Margaret Scheiter delivered 15 homemade quilts Lutheran World Relief, plus $33.75 to cover the cost of shipping. We also have some more quilts that will be donated locally.
Please remember to put your November mites into the mite box in the coat room/card shop at the rear of the church.
We wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving Holiday Season, for remember it is God who has given us everything that we have, including his SON whom he sent to save us.

LAMBS OF HOPE ~PRESCHOOL~
If you have been watching preschool this month, you have seen rainbows and bubbles everywhere! We have been so busy mixing colors and finding new and exciting ways to paint with them. Our “magic” bubbles were our favorite. Mrs. Hammond gave us straws and told us to blow into our bowls. And did we BLOW! We had bubbles everywhere. Big bubbles, small bubbles, red, blue, green and all the colors of bubbles. We even had bubbles in our hair! We made friendly ghosts with our painted bubbles and took them home to hang up for Halloween.
Fall is coming so fast at preschool. We are busy making leaves to go on our special tree. We are watching the beautiful trees outside our window and making our tree look like them.
We are working on our numbers and alphabet. We are counting to 100 already and have learned the second verse to our ABC song. If you could hear us, I know you would be “so proud of us!”
Bible Stories are always so exciting for the children. They love hearing them, coloring their pictures and then telling the story back to me. If I’m not careful, they even catch me when I get a name wrong.
Everyone is now in full swing and ready for the Thanksgiving holiday. Turkeys, Indians, Pilgrims and pumpkin pie are going to be appearing all over the school. New songs for the holiday will be learned as we say good-bye to all of our Halloween songs.
Everyday there is something new and exciting happening at Preschool. Each child enters with emotions that must be handled with all the love and compassion that is expected here at Lambs of Hope. A challenge? Yes, it is, but I assure you the rewards of the love that is returned from each child is fantastic. Yes, I think that is the word I would use when I say “Lambs of Hope Preschool is Fantastic.” If you are close, stop by and see for yourself. We would love the company!

PARISH NURSE H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)
H1N1 is a new influenza virus that is causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in April 2009 in the United States. Because it has spread to many countries, it has been declared a pandemic influenza strain by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
It was originally referred to as “swine flu” because laboratory test showed many of the genes were similar to flu viruses that often occur in pigs (swine). But further studies have shown the virus is very different from what circulates in pigs. So it is now referred to as H1N1.
How Does It Spread
It is thought to occur much the same way as seasonal flu and spreads the same way as seasonal flu.
• Sneezing or coughing
• Touching something infected with the virus
• Nasal secretions
• An infected person can spread this virus to others from 1 day before getting sick to 5 to 7 days after
Signs and Symptoms
• Fatigue
• Fever, chills
• Coughing, sneezing
• Sore throat, muscle aches
Protection for yourself, family and others
• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
• Wash your hands when you come home from being in a crowd, encourage your children to wash their hands often while at school and when returning home.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• If you or your family members are sick with flu like symptoms stay at home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone. Stay away from others as much as possible while you are sick.
Vaccines are currently being developed to protect against H1N1 influenza.
• These vaccines are expected to be effective against H1N1.
• They will not protect you from seasonal flu. You will need to get your seasonal flu vaccine just like you do every year.
• Get vaccinated as soon as the vaccine is available.
• Some people may need more than one vaccine, follow your physician’s advice.
Who should get H1N1 vaccines?
The first groups to receive the vaccine should be these people.
• Pregnant women
• People who live with or care for infants younger than 6 month old
• Health care and emergency personnel
• Anyone from 6 month to 24 years of age
• Anyone from 25 to 64 with certain chronic conditions
If enough vaccine is available everyone should get the vaccine. If you have questions please ask your health care provider. Do not be alarmed by the press, do your part to protect yourself and others. More information can be found at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm

CARD SHOP Due to the need to have the coat racks accessible for the winter months, we will be moving back into the Drive-In kitchen. This will be done as soon as the new window shade arrives and is installed. This should be completed in the next two weeks. The shades were purchased by the Ladies Guild from proceeds of the Card Shop.
Christmas cards have arrived and will be for sale at the Bazaar on November 7th. After that, they will be on display in the card shop.
Thanks for stopping by and also thanks for recording your purchase.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
The students of Hope Lutheran Sunday School will soon be working on the Christmas Program. I know, but it is coming fast. I wanted to make sure all the parents are aware of the date of the program and the date of the rehearsal. The Christmas Program will be on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 7pm. We will have one rehearsal for the kids on the Sunday, December 13 during Sunday School time. I would like to have all the kids participate in the program so if you will not be available for the date we picked please let me know so that I will not assign your child a reading. Let me know as soon as possible as I would like to give out the readings they will each do soon so that they can practice them. I am so looking forward to combining this program with the Adult Choir as we did last year.
We received a thank you from Camp Trinity for the donation from the Sunday School/Bible Class offering collection during the month of September. Check out the display case in the Narthex to read all the thank-you’s from recipients of our offering donations!
“Meet your Sunday School Student of the Month for November" Guillaume (Gui) Williams
With school back in session and the summer over, I thought I better get the “Meet Your Sunday School Student” started again. It was a pleasure to talk to Gui. He will be 9 years old soon and he is in the 3rd grade of Osage Beach Elementary School. He is a very bright kid and very likeable. Here’s some information about him that may help all of you to get to know him better too.
Gui’s favorite Bible character is Isaiah. He says that Isaiah was a prophet and proved that we only have one God. He thought that was pretty neat. The thing he likes most about Sunday school is the songs. He definitely gets that from his mom and dad. His hobby is collecting card sets. He has a lot of pokeman and Bionicles and stuff like that, he collects baseball and football cards too. His favorite sport that he likes and plays a lot is soccer. He told me that he just loves playing soccer. If he has to pick one desert he likes the most, which was very difficult for him to choose , he would go to Andy’s and order Chocolate custard with Oreo crumbles on top. He said that picking a favorite dessert was really hard. His favorite subject in school is computers. He likes to figure things out on them. The last book he read was about Bionicles. He wants to be a scientist or a magician when he grows up. He doesn’t have a favorite color because as he explained to me that there are only 3 primary colors, Red, blue and yellow and that you can make so many colors using just those three that picking one that was his favorite would be really hard. I asked if there was something he wanted to tell us about him that probably not a lot of people know about what would that be: He said he has beat some of his video games all the way to the top level.
Note from Miss Mary: Gui is a very articulate young boy. He loves his pokemon and other bionicles and asked me if I knew what they were. Since I have 3 grandsons I knew and he was a little surprised. His enthusiasm for Sunday School is so great to see. He seems to like a little challenge now and again and I am sure he will help his teachers to learn something from him.
