Pastor Dave At Bethsaida Dig in Israel

The archaeological site of Bethsaida on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee
Welcome to my new site! I have now returned from my sabbatical, which was volunteering with the Bethsaida Archaeology Excavation Project in northern Israel. I will leave the site up with the Bethsaida/Israel reports for a good while now. Thanks to Thrivent Financial for Lutherans for making a site like this available at no cost to Lutherans.

Rediscovered in 1987 by Rami Arav, professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, the site of the New Testament town of Bethsaida has produced evidence of the New Testament-era life in this place along with an unexpected surprise ~

Underneath the ruins of the New Testament town lies a sizable city from the 10th - 8th Centuries B.C., including the time of Kings David and Solomon in Israel and the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel. It has been determined that this was the capital of the Kingdom of Geshur and the home of one of King David's wives, who was the mother of Absalom. (This was Maacah. See 2nd Samuel 3:3.)

Updates during my three-week stay with the excavation team are posted below. To see them, click on the individual days under "Page Links" at the bottom of this page. Blessings!

There are video and PowerPoint presentations on the history of Bethsaida and Geshur as well as the 20 years of the excavations. Also, official photos and reports of each week during the six weeks of excavations during the summer of 2007 will be posted here.

Here is another view of the Bethsaida site, taken from a camera on a tethered balloon. This site is about 1 mile from the Sea of Galilee's northeast corner.
Here are some pictures from recent seasons at the Bethsaida/Geshur archaeological excavation project. Click on each image to enlarge it on your screen. (Some may be so large that you need to scroll up and down and back and forth to see all of it!)

A group of Roman coins discovered at the site
According to John 1:44, Bethsaida was the original home of at least three of Jesus' disciples: Peter, Andrew, and Philip. (Peter and Andrew's fishing business was based in Capernaum, where they lived, but they originally came from Bethsaida.) It is possible that James and John also came from there. This makes it an important site for New Testament knowledge.
