About St. Mark's |

|
St. Mark's congregation was organized in 1891 when a group canvassed The Fountain Square area and determined that a need existed for a Lutheran Church on the near South East side of Indianapolis. The Congregation first met on the second floor of a building on Virginia Avenue at Norwood Street. In the early years we were known as the Second English Lutheran Church. The main structure of St. Mark's current Building was dedicated in 1922 with an expansion added in 1927. For many years, St. Mark's was affiliated with the former Lutheran Church in America. Since 1990, St. Mark's has been a member of the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations.
| | At St. Mark's, we are a family. We care about each other. Although a church should be businesslike in its financial affairs, a church that is only a business is not a part of the body of Christ. We believe that everyone has a place in God's family. We share the common bond of faith that Jesus Christ was born, suffered, died for our sin, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven to join his Father for eternity. In Holy Baptism we are made to be partakers of that eternal life in Jesus Christ. In fact, in Baptism we die to this world and become alive to God's spirit in the world. We believe that infants should be baptized and that they should personally confess their faith when they "come of age" (14 years of age) in what is called Confirmation or Affirmation of Faith. We are a liturgical family. That means we worship using a format called "The Liturgy." It is based on the worship of the Early Church of the 1st Century - from almost 2,000 years ago |

Our Precious Treasure |

|
The wood carving gracing our altar, is a reproduction of "The Last Supper," by Leonardo DeVinci. The masterwork was carved from a single piece of solid white oak by Aloysius Lang, the distinguished German wood carver who is also known for playing "Christus" in the Oberammergau passion play. The carving exhibits dignity and spirituality in every detail. This is especially seen in the faces of Christ and the Twelve Apostles | |
