FROM YOUR PASTOR |
"So when they had come together, they asked him, 'Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?' He replied, 'It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’" Acts 1:6-8The Monday evening bible study is just beginning it's read through the Book of the Acts of the Apostles. (You are welcome to join us on any Monday evening that you are able to attend! We meet in the Fireside Room at 7:00 p.m.) This book might be better called: "The Acts of the Holy Spirit," because one of the first things you notice about it is that nothing happened, or was done in the early days of the Christian Church without the leadership of the Holy Spirit. We forget that to our peril. Today too, both individually and as a group or church, it is only the things that we do that sincerely convey Jesus' love and his regard for God's will to be done among us as it is done in heaven - it is only those things done by the grace of His Holy Spirit that will last or truly matter. When Jesus ascended into heaven he did not leave this world. He merely transformed the way in which he is forever with us. Now he makes no more brief or "mini" visits with us in the flesh. Instead, he is with us always through the Holy Spirit as his Spirit dwells in us and works through our flesh and blood lives. In that sense, the Book of Acts tells the exciting story of how the life, ministry and witness to God that Jesus lived, now lives and continues on in you and me - in the "body of Christ" - those who name him as Lord and pay heed to his word. In Confirmation we are closing out the year by studying what Luther's Catechism teaches about the Third Article: "I believe in the Holy Spirit..." As Luther reminds us in his explanation to that article: "I believe that I cannot by my own understanding or effort believe in Jesus Christ or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and kept me in true faith. In the same way he calls, gathers, enlightens and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it united with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian church day after day he fully forgives my sins and the sins of all believers. On the last day he will raise me and all the dead and give me and all believers in Christ eternal life. This is most certainly true.” Yes, the work of our risen Lord goes on! And we are blessed to be his partners in ministry and mission. ˜ Pastor Greg FRENCH RIVER LUTHERAN CHURCH MISSION STATEMENT: “To live and love as God commands, accept His grace, and share the Good News.” | |

PARISH NURSE REPORT |

Allergy Season Has Blossomed Early This Year Ah, Spring! The trees are budding, the flowers are blooming, and this year the bounty of nature has flourished even earlier than usual. What's not to love? Allergies of course - especially tree pollen allergies. More than half of the 40 percent of Americans who have seasonal allergies are sensitive to the dusting of pollen that trees discharge as they emerge from their winter hibernation. That means millions of people are suffering mightily through this early spring. Timing matters because for many allergy sufferers, treatment works best when it precedes the first encounter with pollen particles. Since pollen counts tend to peak in April, most people do not seek prescriptions for medications until March. But with the warmer weather, the National Allergy Bureau, which keeps a national pollen count, says the spring allergy season shifted forward by about a month. And allergists note that their patient's symptoms are more severe than usual, likely because sufferers did not have time to pretreat themselves. There isn't much you can do about the pollen, but allergy sufferers can lessen symptoms by keeping windows closed, avoiding tree-filled areas and using allergy medications regularly. Nasal sprays can relieve some inflammation, and over-the-counter antihistamines can provide relief from itchy and watery eyes and sneezing -- at least until summer when the grass allergies kick up. Gesundheit! With prayers for your health and healing, Mary Garmer, RN Parish Nurse

Good Gifts: For any occasion |
|
Last month we talked about ELCA Good Gifts, which appear in the giving catalog of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. It is also located at www.elca.org/goodgifts . The gift ideas, which are listed on the bulletin board also, are gifts of animals through God’s Global Barnyard. Animals provide families living in poverty with food, funds and fertilizer—all for a better future. Gifts to God’s Global Barnyard support animal-related projects of ELCA World Hunger. These gifts are filled with meaning and love. ELCA Good Gifts are a special way you can help make a significant impact on the mission and ministries of our church while giving a gift to a friend, pastor, teacher, secret prayer partner neighbor or other loved one at Christmas, birthdays or anniversaries. After you’ve completed your ELCA Good Gifts shopping, visit www.elca.org/goodgiftscards for cards and creative ways to announce your gift. You can order by regular mail using the order form on the bulletin board and the cards there can be used to announce your gift. Good gifts are part of ELCA World Hunger Appeal and receive no funds fro ELCA benevolence gifts. Your Social Ministry Committee
