Here are some suggested items to bring to El Salvador. Please put your name on all your belongings. Please do NOT bring expensive jewelry or electronics. Work Items
Work gloves (extras are welcome and can be left behind)
Hat for protection from the sun
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Old, non-baggy clothes for construction work: light-weight cotton or breathable synthetics are best (again, extras can be left behind in a bag at Hotel Sahara at the end of the week and they will be distributed to people who can use them)
a. Three T-shirts should be sufficient for the week. Be sure to bring your red Thrivent Builds Worldwide T-shirt that you can wear during—and after—the trip, as a reminder of your Thrivent Builds Worldwide El Salvador Community trip.
b. Wear ONLY long pants when working on the construction site. You can bring shorts to wear at the hotel or during the weekend.
c. Women should NOT wear spaghetti straps or tank tops.
d. There are laundry facilities at Hotel Sahara if you would like to wash your clothes during the week. This will be a personal expense.
Comfortable shoes/work boots for the build site and for walking around
Handy wipes/moist towelettes for cleaning your hands at the work site
Electrolyte or “hydrating” drink mix like Gatorade, Propel, Crystal Light, or Replenish, plus an extra water bottle to mix it in. You will get a water bottle in country, but it can leak, so you may want to bring your own.
Personal snacks, if desired
Mask or goggles for dust, if desired
Pocket knife or multi tool. These are useful but not a must. Be sure to carry these in your checked luggage!
Personal Items
Lightweight casual clothes: shirts and pants or skirts. Please make sure you have something appropriate to wear for church (no tennis shoes or jeans, but ties and jackets are not necessary)
Undergarments, socks, pajamas (you will be sharing a room!)
Any prescription drugs or medical care information in case of emergency, including medications you may need for cholesterol, allergy, headache, athletes foot, etc. Your team leaders will have a First Aid kit including: Pepto-Bismol tablets, Imodium, a general antibiotic cream, an anti-itching cream, Band-Aids, aspirin, etc.
Extra set of prescription eyeglasses, contact lenses and solutions for contact lenses
Personal cosmetic and toiletry items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, etc. Hotel Sahara will have towels (but no washcloth) and soap, but you may also want to bring your own if you prefer a particular kind.
Swimsuit and towel for our boat ride and evening trip to the hot springs
Raincoat or light jacket for the cooler evenings
Camera and extra batteries
Passport and two extra photocopies of passport photo page, in case you lose your passport
Money belt or pouch
Money in the form of cash/ATM/credit card for personal expenses, souvenirs, alcohol, etc. Please be sure to have U.S. $10 cash for the visa charge at the airport (the U.S. dollar is legal in El Salvador). No traveler’s checks and no bills larger than $20. Approximately $100-200 is usually sufficient.
Copy of the El Salvador Community Emergency Information document
Photo of your family or friends to share with teammates and friends in El Salvador
Backpacks are handy for the airplane, taking to the work site and during the weekend. Keep all important paperwork, medication, irreplaceable items and a change of clothes in your backpack used as a carry-on.
Plastic bags for dirty clothes, shoes or other uses
Your Easy Spanish Phrase Book and Thrivent Builds luggage tag from your orientation package.
