DEACON’S MESSAGE
37 "Then the righteous will answer Him, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?' 40 "And the King will answer them, '1 assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me. ' Matthew 25 (HCSB)
Synod Assembly is June 7th - 9th this year. I am looking forward to going again and celebrating all the wonderful things that Redeemer has done with others. We have two first- timers heading to Assembly as well this year. Tanya Powell and Angel Shepard have agreed to go. There will be much for them to learn and experience there and I am excited to hear their fresh impressions and input regarding Synod and Redeemer's mission within that framework. Thank you ladies for agreeing to go!
Also, each year we take a check from Redeemer to Synod Assembly for the ELCA World Hunger Campaign. Last year the World Hunger Appeal helped dig wells. Can you imagine how wonderful it would be to have fresh clean water in your community for the first time? I have never been without water so it is beyond my comprehension what joy fresh well water might bring an entire village.
Rumor is (in other words I am not 100% sure of the specifics) that this year the donations will help stock barnyards with animals. Fresh eggs and milk for everyone! So Redeemer will again look to collect, throughout the month of May, donations for the Synod World Hunger Appeal. Whatever comes in this month marked ELCA Hunger will be pooled with other ELCA churches' donations at Assembly.
But wait, there is more! Last year, for the amazing collection of over $300 in change for the World Hunger Appeal I colored a swatch of my hair purple. It was, however, not enough. The congregation wanted more! This year I have agreed to do the entire lot of hair if $600 is raised. Double the coloring for double the money. But wait, that was still not enough! I have now been challenged that with the raising of $2000 or more for World Hunger in May I would go not only full purple color but also don a punk hairstyle for the first service in June. And so the challenge is on! If you raise the money, my hair will be colorfully raised into spikes!
Again, in case you missed this announcement or just did not want to read the whole letter, if $2000 is raised in the month of May for the World Hunger Appeal at Synod Assembly, I will conduct the Sunday morning service on June 3rd with a purple punk rock hair-do! And yes, I will allow pictures to be taken that day.
Grace and Peace be yours in abundance,
Deacon Barbara Hayden, Pastoral Leader
