K.K.K.T. ULANGA/KILOMBERO DIOCESE TRIP REPORT
JANUARY 22, 2008 – JANUARY 31, 2008ANDREA L. MANN
GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH – WENATCHEE, WA USA
PASTOR EZEKIEL A. MWAMBUNGU
STUDENT – IRINGA
LOCATION: Ifakara is the diocese home office, which is located approximately 300 miles SW of Dar es Salaam. The diocese is split into 4 districts. Each district has one district pastor who provides oversight to many churches, pastors and evangelists in the district. We met with each district pastor in their district along with their elders and lay ministers, reviewed project ideas and visited project sites. Photos were taken of project sites with the elders and diocese leadership.
Kidatu District lies approximately 50 miles NE of Ifakara. The main highway is a dirt and gravel road. Travel time is approximately 2-3 hours from Ifakara. Hydro-electric power production dams, sugar cane production and processing, irrigated agriculture, and wildlife viewing are the main industries. This city is very prosperous and appears to be growing. An airstrip is available.
Government run primary and secondary schools are present. A Rotary club from Maryland was a partner on a community development project on the edge of town.
Malinyi District is located a full days drive to the SW of Ifakara. The first portion of the road crosses the Kilombero river just outside of Ifakara. A ferry, very much the size of the Keller Ferry in Washington, carried 3-4 vehicles across the river.
The second portion of the dirt road is very much like the U.S. Forest Service roads when they break up in the spring. They are mud roads filled with large water holes, ruts, and many times large trucks which are stuck up to their axels in the mire.
Teak plantations, subsistence farming, and wildlife hunting are the main economy. Rice, corn, beans, mangos, cattle, goats and pigs were the main agricultural products seen. Mangos were having a very good year. I was told that when Mangos are having a good year, it will not be a good harvest of other crops. Many crops had had too much rain already this year, and were being replanted.
Lugala hospital uses solar power and generators to provide electricity where no power lines exist. Most surgeries are cesarean section operations. Seventeen babies were in the hospital the day we visited. All the mothers were very young and small in the hips, which probably contributed to the need for cesarean delivery.
Tumaini school is a bible college for evangelists and a secondary school. They use generators in the evening for a few hours only. The class size in two classes I taught English to where 60 –80 students. I saw the scores from the national exam in the diocese youth office and they all were in the C & D range. The school has a plan to provide a better education, which includes lab work, more teachers, and the development of a library and internet.
Americans told me the river divides the diocese. The Tanzanian people told me, this is just a part of the journey they make every day and only divides the diocese geographically, but does not divide them as a community of believers.
An airstrip is located between the school and the hospital.
Ifakara District is located in the city of Ifakara and is made up of several city and out lying area congregations. The city streets consist of dirt and gravel. One of the largest industries is teak wood production. Teak plantations are found all along the Malinyi road and are protected from elephants with high power electric fences. Many of the parishioners are members and leaders in the teak operation. An airstrip and bus service is available.
Mlimba District is located approximately 75 miles W of Ifakara on a dirt road which is in much the same condition as the Malinyi road. The main industry is sustainable farming and hydro-electric production. Bananas were being harvested and trucked to Dar es Salaam in January 2008. Peanuts are a local crop not seen in other areas of this visit.
Mlimba has a stretch of paved road from the airstrip to the hydro-electric project. The city has many government schools and a hospital with no surgical doctor.
UKD Leadship Profile: Young, well-educated leaders are on board. Several members of the leadership team have lived, worked and studied abroad and have brought new and innovative ideas back home. The new bishop will be installed in April. In the transition time, the retiring bishop is working with the bishop elect.
Most or all members of the leadership are local people who were born and raised in the diocese. They are all committed to making the lives of their people much better. They are eager to hear new ideas and implement them. They have developed a strategic plan and are working to implement the project ideas found within.
A national church staff member was present in the diocese 3 days to provide Quickbook training to management team members of the diocese. The training was provided with only one computer that all shared.
All diocese office staff and district office staff would benefit from having laptop computers and internet availability. They are very interested in implementing video conferencing with partners and sponsors.
