Project Progress Report for the Construction of the Assembly Hall at Tumaini Lutheran Seminary

Date of Reporting: 29th of August 2008

Report Period: 19.07.208 through 29.08.2008

Project Name: Construction of Dining Hall at Tumaini Lutheran Seminary

Goal

Ensure promotion of quality education according to the needs within the framework of overall national socio-economic development plans and guidelines.

Objectives

i. To provide a reliable and hygienically convenient dining hall to the secondary school with the capacity to accommodate 500 people.

ii. To raise the quality of education and increase standards of academic achievements in the examinations both internal and external.

iii. To relieve students, staff members and community members--parents/guardians from insanitary assembly facility.

Activities

The entire area of the building site was cleared carefully including all trees, bushes, grasses, roots, trunks, stones and other debris. All debris, topsoil, vegetation and unwanted soil were removed from the site.

After clearing and cleaning, the topsoil was stripped down to a depth 20cm for the whole building site plus 2 meters around the building perimeter. Stripped soils was removed from the site and spread out from the site.

Coconut, teak and mango trees situated around the building site was removed deep down to their foundation and dumped far from the building site.

The stripped land was leveled to form the platform for the construction of the building and pedestrian ways according to the drawings. Holes produced by the removal of trunks and roots were filled, leveled and compacted.

Additional bricks (20,000) to start up the construction work were bough and ferried from the furnace to the building site.

Also, excavation of sand from the nearby site to the building place was done by the workmen since students had been involving in indoor program to compensate the scheduled brick laying activities.

Setting out of the building was done by the builder/contractor according to the drawings. He also checked the square of the setting out that diagonals are of equal length.

Time Schedule

The project started a month after arrival of the funds from Lutheran Mission Cooperation. This has been the case bearing in mind project contractual issues and technical guidelines for implementation and monitoring.

The building activities started in the midst of July 2008 with the execution of the notice to proceed from the management of the diocese.

Personnel

The key people who have been involved in the implementation of the project were the Director of the seminary and Acting Headmaster under supervision of the General Secretary and Diocesan Projects and Development Secretary. The students were involved removing debris from the building site supervised by their teachers.

Target Group
The project will benefit 400 students and 36 staff members. Also, during graduation ceremonies, the school members together with parents/guardians and invited guests will use the assembly hall for ceremonies.
The government official and communities around will use the hall for seminars, workshops, meetings and conference. The pastors, deacons, evangelists and church workers will use the hall for workshops, seminars, conferences and meetings.
Challenges
It was very expensive to recruit the building engineer from the district office to provide technical guidelines through the use of project funds. The school has to incur extra costs for the expenses of technical consultation.

Students did not involve during this phase of the project since they will get involved more in brick laying. The school has incurred more expenses to accomplish this phase as part project own funding.

Conclusion

The management of the diocese highly comments the valued grant support from the Eastern Washington Idaho Synod/ELCA, which made this project feasible.

Documentation

The building cost analysis and photos of the building under construction process have been attached in this project for your reference and scrutiny.

Tumaini Dining Hall 2008
Dear in Christ,
Warmest greetings from Ulanga Kilomnbero Diocese. I am sending these two documents regarding the construction of the dining hall at Tumaini Lutheran Seminary of UKD located in Malinyi. Some initial activities already accomplished ready to start building the foundation of the assembly hall. Our friends from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria spent three days involving in brick laying as you can see them the attached pictures. (thr fist row shows student getting meals outside, the second row shows a tractor ferrying bricks and sand and the third row shows Pastor Ezekiel Mwambungu and friends from Germany making bricks for the hall) made about 1,200 bricksa as their contribution to make this important project feasible. So far we spent about TZS 2,300,000/= in the initial activities and by the midst of September we will be in the position of erecting foundation wall. I will keep updated with the information as project progresses.

Rregards,

Philoria M. Mpendaye
