Go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.
And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
(Mathew 28, 19-20)
“Evangelism” is a word of Greek origin. It means “bringing good news”. The modern English word “Gospel” (Godspell in Old English) means the same thing: Good Word.
Throughout history, the Christians have used different approaches to bring the good news to the various parts of the world. Some of these approaches have been controversial and sometimes ineffective. While the good news has to be heard by those we seek to touch only our individual and community lifestyle will ultimately reveal how God is affecting our life and motivate others to become Christian. With our “light shining before men, they will see our good deeds and praise our Father in heaven.” (Mathew 5, 16)
Now, what can or should we do at Christ Lutheran Church to carry on the mission to spread the Gospel?
In a report to an ELCA meeting (August 12, 2003), presiding Bishop Mark S. Hanson proposes a three prong approach to Evangelical outreach.
1. As Christians, we are called as witnesses
- To speak the truth with clarity and conviction about what God/Jesus has done and is doing in the world and in our lives.
- To show evidence that Jesus/God is involved in people’s life and the world around them.
- To deliver the healing word of God/Jesus to immensely broken and suffering people concluding that God must be absent.
2. As Christians, we invite and welcome others.
3. As Christians, we ready ourselves for changes.
The admonitions of Bishop Hanson have scripture foundations and direct implications for Christ Lutheran Church. Those are summarized in the following document.
