Pew Backs, Left side of the aisel. Again, the card holder. But what is that other little fixture???Years ago (as in many churches) the men of our congregation sat on one side of the church, while the women and children sat on another. The women (who sat on the right) invariably wore hats in the service. Often these were beatiful Easter-bonnet or pill box types reserved especially for Sunday. The men (who sat on the left side of the aisle, or as they liked to say, to the right hand of God) also wore their hats on Sunday morning, but took them off as a sign of respect in church. What you see on the pew backs on the left side of the church are mens' hat clips! Hung neatly on their clips on the mens side of the church, they were safe from being sat on! |

Close up of Ascension's carved wood font depicting the ship and the cross. The ship has been a sign of the Christian Church from the first century. It draws its imagery from the stories of Noah (Genesis 6-9) Jonah (Jonah 1) and Jesus calming the sea (Matthew 8:23-27, and symbolizes Jesus Christ saving Christians through faith and Holy Baptism, despite the stormy seas of life, and transporting them safely from this world to the next. |
