American Arts Day

A lesson in making German stars...
American Arts Day originated as a way of sharing some of the hand crafts that our host families enjoy in their spare time.

Linda Beiler will demonstrate how to weave German Stars with wheat. Linda, a published author, has a varied background in crafts, including wheat weaving, basketry and fiber arts.

You will weave one (or more) straw stars that you can take home with you as a remembrance of your time in Lancaster County.

Quilting on the official CIH quilt...
In 1990, Deb Lorah created a quilt by modifying a traditional Amish pattern called "Trip Around the World." The purpose of the quilt was to teach CIH students how to do hand quilting, which is the process of sewing three layers of fabric together.

Since 1990, every CIH student has quilted one block on the quilt and autographed the back of the quilt with their name and message. It is quite fascinating to look at the back of the quilt and know that people from around the world have actually quilted it.

You too can add your stitches and autograph so that you can be part of quilt history!

Making Chicken Pot Pie Pennsylvania Dutch style...
The third "craft" of the day is a lesson on how to make and roll noodles for Chicken Pot Pie, a traditional Lancaster County food that is unlike any other pot pie you may have eaten.

In fact, when you roll out those pot pie noodles, you will actually be making the evening meal. Yummy!!

Other foods served at this meal are also traditional Lancaster County foods, such as pepper cabbage and cole slaw.
