The ELCA's Mission Marked with the cross of Christ forever, we are claimed, gathered, and sent for the sake of the world. - Mission statement of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Our Vision Claimed by God’s grace for the sake of the world, we are a new creation through God’s living Word by the power of the Holy Spirit; Gathered by God’s grace for the sake of the world, we will live among God’s faithful people, hear God’s Word, and share Christ’s supper; Sent by God’s grace for the sake of the world, we will proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, serve all people following the example of our Lord Jesus, and strive for justice and peace in all the world. . | Peace Lutheran Church is associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the ELCA in an interdependent relationship described as "the three expressions." Namely, each congregation is fully church, but not the whole church. One is not above or below the other. Each has its purpose and work on different levels but are unified in purpose: To carry out God's mission of bringing the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world and living out that Gospel in thought, word, and deed in the congregation, the community, the nation, and the world. God help us to fulfill our mission. | The Southwestern Synod of the ELCA Mission StatementThe congregations and all the baptized who are the Southwestern Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are claimed by this mission: God places us in cities, farms and towns together under one prairie sky. The Risen Christ surprises us with opportunities to plant God's Word in the world. Walking together in confidence, we cultivate life-giving congregations, nurture partner ministries, and cooperate in the life of the ELCA. By God's grace, together we have what we need. . |

The first major endeavor was to invite Rev. Sikhathesihle Khumalo and Moses Mahlangu from the Vryheid Circuit in South Africa to visit the area and meet and greet people to explore the opportunities to do ministry together. The guests stayed in homes of church members, offering more opportunity to deepen the relationship by experiencing their every day lives. | | | Hong Kong Mission Support | ELCA Global Mission link | |

| | Zimmerman to Deliver Transfiguration Talks |
(A February 11, 2009 reprint from The Gustavus Quarterly publication of Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN) |
The Rev. Dr. Ted Zimmerman ‘69 will be at Gustavus Adolphus College for a weeklong residency to deliver a series of “Transfiguration Talks” at daily and Sunday chapel services from Thursday, Feb. 19 to Tuesday, Feb. 24. The Transfiguration Talks at Gustavus have a long tradition. In 1986, religion professor Robert Esbjornson ‘43, who was then also serving as interim chaplain for the College, started the tradition when he invited alumnus Thomas Anderson ‘63, then pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in San Francisco, to his alma mater to speak. Each year since then, the Chaplains’ Office has invited a different alumni minister to participate in the worship life of the College through these weeklong “Transfiguration Talks.” Zimmerman was born in Beijing, China, and spent much of his youth in Hong Kong before enrolling at Gustavus in 1965. He went on to seminary at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, earning an M.Div. degree in 1974. After serving congregations in Tennessee and Taiwan, Zimmerman moved back to St. Paul where he earned a Th.D. degree from Luther Seminary. Upon receiving his doctoral degree in 1993, he and his family moved to Hong Kong, where he has taught New Testament and Greek at the Lutheran Theological Seminary for the past 15 years. Zimmerman will center his chapel talks on the theme of “Mission in the 21st Century” with a focus on China and Hong Kong. His residency will also compliment the College’s Global Insight program, which is spending the 2008-09 academic year focusing on China, its people, culture, and politics. The schedule for Zimmerman’s talks in Christ Chapel is as follows: Thursday, Feb. 19 / “The Midwest and China: Our Mission Roots” / 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20 / “Greater China: The Scene Today” / 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22 / “Transfiguration: Mountaintop and Valley” / 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 23 / “Hong Kong Today: Crossroads of East and West” / 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 / “The Call: God’s Mission in All Directions” / 10 a.m. Media Contact: Media Relations Manager Matt Thomas news@gustavus.edu
