Guatemala's first Lutheran day school opened in 1953 in downtown Zacapa. Soon thereafter, a new school was built on a larger parcel of land called "Loma Luterana" or Lutheran Hill. In 1970, a middle school (Básico) was added.
After the devastating 1976 earthquake destroyed the school's facilities, the people rebuilt the school, this time with modern, larger classrooms with more ventilation for Zacapa's hot climate.
Career levels were added beginning in 1978. The first career programs offered were Primary Education and Homemaking Education. Soon programs in Accounting, Specialist in Community Development, Secretarial, Office Administration, and Bilingual Secretarial were added.
A dormitory was established in the mid-1970's making education accessible to children who lived in the more remote villages. The dormitory has expanded and can accomodate more than 40 full-time residents. Today it houses students from across Guatemala and other countries.
Fifty years later Colegio Luterano continues to serve the community providing a quality Christian education from Kindergarten through high school. The facilities include the elementary section and a new four-story secondary section.
The school's reputation draws students from across the economic and social spectrum. Across Guatemala, it is possible to find civil, government, and church leaders who attended Colegio Luterano el Divino Salvador. Nearly all of Guatemala's current Lutheran pastors and deacons either attended or taught at the school.
Presently, over 600 students attend Colegio Luterano.
