South Pleasant Lutheran Church is the "little country church" located 2 1/2 miles east of Christine, ND, just west of the Wild Rice River. South Pleasant opens its doors for summer worship as well as the parish Thanksgiving Eve worship each year.The South Pleasant congregation has begun a tradition to hold an annual breakfast prior to worship one Sunday in July. Proceeds benefit the Clay-Wilkin Habitat for Humanity program.
HISTORY
> On November 27, 1872 the Pleasant Congregation was organized at a home of one of the ten charter members.
> The Pleasant Congregation was served by visiting pastors until Rev. Rasmus J. Wisnaes accepted the call in 1879. He served faithfully until his retirement in 1930.
> First church for Pleasant Congregation was built on the west bank of the Wild Rice River in 1879. The building was also used as a parochial school.
> In February 1880, Pleasant Congregation was divided into the North Pleasant and South Pleasant congregations.
> The first parsonage was built in 1882 west of Hickson and later moved to Christine, North Dakota.
> The parsonage not only served as a home for the pastor and family, but also as a frequent meeting place for the Luther League.
> The church building was destroyed by a storm on July 25, 1885.
> During the next five years, worship was held in various school houses in the area.
> On the nineteenth Sunday after Trinity, 1890 the cornerstone was laid and the church was dedicated on June 9, 1895.
> A basement was dug at a later date and electrical wiring was installed in 1941. Indoor plumbing has not been added to date.
> In 1943 a pageant depicting the lives of some of the pioneer Lutheran pastor's wives was held as a tribute to their memory.
> At the 75th, 90th and 100th Anniversaries, the Reunion Choir sang "Holy, Holy, Holy".
