Alyce Weiss Honored |
Alyce Weiss was honored on Sunday, April 15, 2012. For 40 years, Alyce played the organ and accompanied the choirs for St. John Lutheran Church, Sterling, NE. Reverend Mark Jamison presented a plaque to Alyce, stating that it was an honor to have worked with her. He also said that he knew that her husband Dwight's support was important in order for her to have continued for so many years. Family and friends gathered following the church service for cofŽfee and cake to celebrate this milestone. Alyce began playing piano by ear, at the age of 5. Both Alyce's parents were pianists. Her father played by ear and her mother was trained. Alyce's interest continued to grow and thus, in the 6th grade, she began her formal training. The piano lessons helped her to get the funŽdamentals necessary to move her forward. The next big step was to move into playing the church organ. From 1960 to 1963, Alyce played a pump organ at Peace Lutheran in Lewiston, NE. From there she moved to Burr, NE, where she played for Hope Lutheran from 1967-1972. In 1972, Alyce came to St. John Lutheran in Sterling, NE. At St. John, she took on the challenge of learning to play the pedals with her feet, as well as the two keyboards with her hands. Having had no formal training on the organ, Alyce was able to conquer this obstacle, playing until she felt it was time to step down. St. John is blessed to have had her be a part of the church service for all those years. |

New Banner for St. John |

|
A new banner, "Christ the Light of the World" was displayed April 29. | | | | NEWSLETTER | Pastor's Pen The month of May brings us to the end of another school year for public schools and instiŽtutions of higher learning. We think of and congratulate all our graduates on their mileŽstone accomplishments. We also offer them our prayers and best wishes for the future. It is the end of an old chapter in their lives and the beginning of a new one. New acquaintances and friendships will be forged at work or at school. For some, it means socially reinventing themselves in a new living situation. To some degree the bonds of past association or friendship may loosen or fade away.
