Abiding Savior-Your church away from home.
Someone once said, "You never take a vacation from God." How true that is! Even though you may be away from home and your home congregation, you still need the spiritual strength that comes through the hearing of the Word of God and the Sacraments that He has given to us.
When you come to winter in Zapata, stop by Abiding Savior for a visit. We have folks attending from many states of the United States and even Canadians. Everyone is welcome.

OUR SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES
On Sunday mornings we provide a well-attended Bible Class at 9:15. The worship service follows at 10:30. Holy Communion is celebrated on the first and third Sunday of each month.
In addition, a Bible Study is held on Wednesdays at 5:00 PM. During the Advent and Lenten seasons, this Bible Class is replaced with midweek worship services.

Pastor Paul and Charlene Helmer
Pastor Helmer has been serving Abiding Savior since January of 2005. He is in Zapata from about October to April. The Helmers permanent home is in Gardner, Kansas.
He is a graduate of St. John's College, Winfield, Kansas, (A.A., 1961), Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Indiana, (B.A., 1963), Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, (M.Div., 1967) and St. Louis University, St. Louis, Missouri, (M.A., 1982). He has served congregations in Flint, Michigan; Liberal, Kansas; Winfield, Kansas; and Fort Dodge, Iowa. From 1977 through 1986, he served on the faculty of St. John's College where he taught Classical Greek, German, and theology. In addition, he was chairman of the Department of Theological Studies and Director of the Preseminary Program.
Charlene has served as the organist for Abiding Savior. She is a graduate of St. John's College in the Parish Worker Program (1962)and served for several years as a secretary in the Department of Higher Education of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
The Helmers have four children, two of whom are married, and seven grandchildren.
DIRECTIONS
To find Abiding Savior, go to the corner of U.S. 83 and State 16. Turn northeast at the intersection and drive about two miles to the corner of State 16 and 14th Street. Turn northwest one block. We are the church with the red roof, which is visible from highway 16.

SERVICE AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Our Annual Chili and Soup Luncheon
Not only does Abiding Savior provide spiritual nourishment in Christ through a ministry of Word and Sacrament, but also opportunities for service and social activities. We are a very active congregation during the winter months when our attendance is highest.
We have a Social Club and a Ladies' Sewing Group. The Social Club meets about once a month and the Sewing Group each week.
