Soccer for Children in Iraq
THE ST. JAMES YOUTH GROUP AND SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS ARE BEGINNING AN EXCITING NEW PROJECT: "SOCCER SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN IN IRAQ." THE YOUTH GROUP WILL COLLECT "SPONSORSHIPS FOR SOCCER BALLS" AT $10.00 PER BALL. WE HAVE A CONTACT PERSON IN IRAQ WHO WILL RECEIVE THE DEFLATED BALLS AND BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PLACING THEM WITH THE NEEDY CHILDREN IN IRAQ. FOR EACH PERSON WHO WOULD LIKE TO PURCHASE A BALL, A CUT-OUT SOCCER BALL WILL BE GIVEN TO THEM TO SIGN AND SEND ALONG WITH THE BALL. WE WOULD ALSO ASK THAT NOTES OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO THE CHILDREN BE INCLUDED. THIS WAY PEOPLE CAN PURCHASE A BALL "ON THE SPOT" AND NOT HAVE TO HASSLE WITH A PURCHASE AND BRINGING IT TO THE COLLECTION SITE. WE WOULD ALSO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO WRITE GENERAL NOTES OF THANKS TO OUR SOLDIERS WHICH WOULD BE HANDED OUT AMONG OUR TROOPS. SOCCER BALLS WILL BE PURCHASED AND PACKED FOR SHIPMENT ALONG WITH AIR PUMPS AND NEEDLES. THE BOXES WILL BE INSURED. IT TAKES ABOUT THREE TO FOUR WEEKS TO GET THE SHIPMENT TO ITS DESTINATION-IF THERE IS ANYONE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO WOULD LIKE TO SPONSOR A SOCCER BALL FOR CHILDREN IN IRAQ, PLEASE CONTACT LEONA, RICK, OR ANY MEMBER OF THE YOUTH GROUP.
Youth Rally

The St. James Lutheran Youth Organization took time out of a busy weekend for some fun in Rockford...Laser Quest will never be the same!
Six youth and one very keen-eyed sponsor enjoyed a Sunday afternoon of Laser Tag and Giordano's Pizza...well, make that five youth and one sponsor for the pizza (Josh had soccer in Dekalb and had to go there hungry...sorry, Josh)
We have included a copy of the score sheet for our final game...the winner was "The Big Dog"...
HINT: The Big Dog is not one of the youth!
A good time was had by all...even the losers!

The St. James LYO are planning a trip to Canada (compliments of the Erickson's generosity and cabin on the lake!) and will be working at a Youth Camp and Indigenous People's Reservation near the Erickson's get-a-way cabin for a week in July. This project is an opportunity for the youth to begin the process of learning to cooperate with each other before our trek to San Antonio in 2006 for the ELCA Youth Convention. We discussed, today, who would be needing to learn to cook something for their turn at one of the meals during our stay in Canada. Craig and John will be fixing a fish dinner...though John nor Craig fish...hopefully there will be a local fish market that will provide the "catch-of-the-day"..........Jenna will eat fish for the first day or two but must have chips and salsa any subsequent meals...her father's input when they visit Minnesota has soured her on fish everyday!

Keep your eyes peeled for several of the Youth Service Projects: Habitat for Humanity, Tri-County Animal Shelter, Prison Ministry, Rockford Rescue Mission, and general helpfulness around the church...(like Craig staying awake in the choir loft!)

The Youth are thankful to the membership of St. James for their support through prayers, encouragement, and financial helpfulness for all our projects and activities...

You all are a great bunch of folks!
