Appropriate Hymns
If there is any time in our life, when our hearts desire to sing in joy and thanks, it has to be on the day that we join with that unique individual with whom we will share the rest of our life.

Marriage is one of the greatest blessings that God gives us... a blessing that only exists in this lifetime, not in heaven.

The hymns presented below express a thankful heart to God for this gift of love. And these songs express a commitment between man and woman to honor and love each other.

This is a blessing that could be used at the end of the service. Though verse 2 talks about abiding in Christian union, it certainly is understood also on one’s wedding day as a prayer that husband and wife remain in this union as they are strengthened by the Lord through the Word and his sacraments.

"So may we abide in union
With each other and the Lord,
Gathered here in blest communion
By the power of his Word."

Text of the Hymn
Since there are many pressures and temptations that threaten the bond of marriage, this hymn reminds us that there are certain ‘ties’ in this life that God gives us, that are (or ought to be) beyond these threats. Though people can destroy the unity that God has created, God will help those who seek to keep or restore those ties.

"Blest be the tie that binds
Our hearts in Christian love;

“We share our mutual woes,
Our mutual burdens bear,
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.”

Text of the Hymn
This hymn seeks God’s blessings on the home: that husband and wife are guided by godly love, that even their sorrows are turned to joy, and that peace rests on them and their children.

"O blessed home, where man and wife
Together lead a godly life,
By love their faith confessing!"

Text of the Hymn
This hymn is based on Paul’s description of love in I Corinthians 13:4-8.
"Love means forgiveness, patience, and kindness;
Love is not jealous, boastful, or rude.
Love endures all things, bearing, believing;
Love hopes forever, rejoices in truth."
