In chapter two of Ephesians we read, "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." What are these good works that God has prepared for us? Works don't get us to Heaven, so what use are they? The third chapter of Titus states, "Our people must also learn to engage in good deeds to meet pressing needs, so that they will not be unfruitful." The second chapter of James warns, "For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead." God's grace leads to faith, which results in our doing good works. The title of this article is taken from a wonderful hymn about missionary work and the gifts and talents with which God has blessed us, TLH #496, LW #318. In it are encouraging words for us to use our gifts and talents to do God's work here on earth. Members of our congregation, both old and new, possess these gifts and talents to aid Trinity Lutheran Church and School in its mission to teach and spread the Gospel. Romans chapter twelve tells us, "For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching; or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness." Our church body can always benefit from more Sunday school teachers, choir members, board members, office helpers, workers at our school, visitation guild members, and many other capacities in which our members' gifts and talents can be used to God's glory. All of our members are encouraged to serve according to the gifts and talents with which God has blessed them. We should especially assist our new members in utilizing their gifts and talents in our congregation so that they might be better integrated into our church body. "Now, you are the body of Christ, and everyone has his place in it." (1 Corinthians 12:27) In closing, the fourth chapter of 1 Peter reads, "Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen."
