Solar Food Drier
Solar Food Drying Project.
By Eng. Matthew Josephat Matimbwi
1. Introduction.
Ulanga and Kilombero districts are rich in production of fruits, spices, vegetables and small fish. Those food products are available seasonally.

Extra mangoes are swept away as rubbish-Malinyi People experience food scarcity during the months of December to March, and fruits scarcity during the months of January to June.

There are cases of malnutrition and vitamin deficiency reported at Lugala Lutheran Hospital. The situation is alarming that Lugala Lutheran Hospital has to establish special fund for provision of special diet to the malnutrition patients. The most victims are children.

People do not know the simple improved technologies for preserving fruits, spices, small

fish and vegetables that they are available during off seasons.

2. Technology Introduction
Women under training
Technology of solar food drying is not much known in the area of Ulanga and Kilombero Districts. There were very few people who were drying cereal leaves, but not in the appropriate way.

Three parties, ELCT Ulanga-Kilombero Diocese (Bishop Rev. Abel Mwambungu), Bethlehem Lutheran Church in USA (Mr. Robert Graef) and Conservators Bureau (Eng. Matthew Matimbwi) carried out the pilot project to introduce the technology. The entry point was the ward of Malinyi, in Ulanga District in Morogoro Region.

It was planned to train 50 women from all villages. At the end of training phase, 52 women were trained. 60 driers were made and extra ones were distributed to the interested people.

3. Results of the project
Women drying small fish.
The project imparted the knowledge and raised the awareness of members of community in preserving food using solar energy.

More women and men asked to have opportunity of attending training, but the project had no capacity beyond planned number of participants.

After training phase that ended De, 2007, women are busy drying fruits, vegetables, and small fish.

Some guests have been visiting the project from

Germany and US to see what women are doing. In July, 2008 women held demonstration when the Freedom Touch visited the Township of Malinyi.
