Zion Lutheran will again be one of the Deer Park “Pumpkin Lane” stops for children on
October 25th. We’ll need lots of candy and volunteers. Please let Ruth know if you can help. If you’re able to donate candy, please have it at the church by Sunday, October 19th so that we’ll know if more needs to be purchased by the Saturday, the 25th.

A big THANK YOU to all of the cooks and everyone who helped set up and clean up on September 7th for the Rally Day breakfast. A special thank you to Bob & Roberta Schroeder for providing and leading the craft project! The food and fellowship was outstanding!

Sermon Mar 9/April Pastor Schedule
I have been jokingly telling people that I took Martin Marty with me to Walt Disney World in Florida. What I really meant was that I took with me a new book from Marty, The Mystery of the Child. That title seemed appropriate for a trip to the great playground for children of all ages that is the Magic Kingdom.

[In case you don’t know: Martin Marty is one of the great Lutheran scholars of our time, with an emphasis in church history. He is entering the ninth decade of his life with both true maturity and with the true spirit of the child. Many in our area were delighted to hear him in person at our recent Synod Assembly in Spokane].

Walking through Disney World, I discovered living parables of the central question of Marty’s new book: shall we primarily treat children as a problem to control or as a mystery to wonder and discover? I saw in many children’s eyes true delight, merriment and awe. When I located their parents, I usually saw in the parents the same delight, merriment and awe. These parents were in tune with the mystery of the child.

Then there were the “other children.” They were cranky, tired, frustrated, rude, and angry. Then I would hear outbursts from their parents like: Stop crying! Be quiet! I paid a lot of @%#*& money for you to have fun, so you better shape up!!! These parents were all control and had little or no sense of mystery.

In his book, Marty invites us to primarily see children as mystery. Marty asserts that the provision of care for children will be radically changed and revised if – instead of seeing the child as first a problem to control – we see the child first as a mystery surrounded by mystery.

There are many definitions of the word “mystery.” Of the thirteen definitions of “mystery” in the Oxford English Dictionary, Martin Marty draws from number 11: mystery as “a matter unexplained or inexplicable.” Marty further understands mystery as something we discover, relate with, enjoy, but never control. To see the child primarily as mystery is to be open to discovering the unpredictable wonder of the child.
